What You’ll Need

You’ll need a couple of spices, avocado, chipotle, pineapple, and peppers. Check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for full ingredient amounts.

For the Burgers

  • Ground beef – I prefer lean ground beef.
  • Hamburger buns

Smokey Spice Blend

  • Smoked paprika – Any kind of paprika works.
  • Garlic powder – Feel free to use 1/2 tablespoon of finely chopped garlic.
  • Salt
  • Ancho chili powder – If you can’t find it, swap it for more cumin.
  • Ground cumin
  • Ground black pepper

Spicy Mayo

  • Mayo – I prefer full-fat, but low-fat works too.
  • Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce – You can use chipotle sauce.
  • Smoked paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Lime juice – Lemon juice is a good swap.

Avocado Mash

  • Avocado
  • Lime juice
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt

Pineapple Pepper Relish

  • Pineapple – You can use canned pineapple if it’s well-rinsed and drained.
  • Red pepper – Any color of bell pepper is okay.
  • Yellow pepper
  • Fresh cilantro – Skip it if you’re not a fan of cilantro.
  • Lime juice
  • Salt

Can I Use Turkey or Chicken Burgers?

Of course! Ground turkey and chicken are lean proteins that’ll make these avocado burgers even healthier without compromising the flavor.

How to Make Avocado Burgers on the Grill

From the spicy mayo to the pineapple relish, every component is equally easy to make.

  • Make the spice mix. Whisk the smoked paprika, garlic powder, sea salt, ancho chili powder, ground cumin, and black pepper in a small bowl until well combined.
  • Prepare the spicy mayo. Mix the mayo, chipotle pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and lime juice in a small bowl until well combined. Set it aside.
  • Season the patties. Sprinkle the spice mix on one side of every patty. Let them sit on a baking sheet until ready to grill.
  • Make the avocado mash. Add the avocado to a medium bowl. Use a fork to mash it completely. Mix in the lime juice, garlic powder, and salt. Set it aside.
  • Prepare the relish. Preheat the grill to medium-high. Place the whole peppers on the grill. Grill on each side for 3-4 minutes, until slightly charred. Remove and let them sit for 3-4 minutes. Stem, remove the seeds, and dice the peppers. Mix the diced peppers, pineapple, fresh cilantro, lime juice, and salt in a bowl. Toss to combine. Set it aside.
  • Grill them. Place the seasoned burger patties on the grill. Cook on each side for 4-5 minutes and remove from the heat. Set them aside. Toast the buns.
  • Assemble. Spread the buns with spicy mayo. Add the burger patty, avocado mash, relish, and the top bun. Enjoy!

Tips for Success

Any avocado hamburger gets yummier (and easier to make) when you know what corners you can cut.

  • Add leafy greens. You can always make things healthier by adding 1-2 lettuce leaves or a handful of baby spinach.
  • Use leftovers. Feel free to use up leftover bits of bell peppers, pineapple, cilantro, and avocado to make this burger. No one will tell!
  • Prep ahead. Make the spice mix, spicy mayo, and pineapple relish in advance. That way you cut down on most of the prep time when it’s time to cook!
  • Mix it in. You can speed up the process and get the same flavor by adding the spice mix into the ground beef before forming the patties.
  • Make it cheesy. Add 1 slice of cheddar or mozzarella cheese on top of each patty. Let it cook until melted for a cheesy bite.

What to Serve with Avocado Hamburgers

Like any classic, this avocado burger is perfect with a side of Pommes Frites or Sweet Potato Fries. Leftover Roasted Potatoes are a great side too. If you’re hosting a cookout, don’t forget to also serve Corn on the Cob, Honey BBQ Chicken Wings, and Buffalo Chicken Wings for a true taste of summer.

How to Store & Reheat Leftovers

Once fully cooled, refrigerate any leftovers in separate airtight containers. The patties and spicy mayo will last up to 4 days. The avocado mash and pineapple relish will only last 2 days.

To reheat the patties, microwave them for up to a minute or until warm. You can also heat them in a pan over medium heat for 6-8 minutes. The rest of the components should be served chilled or at room temperature.
